Matt aims to breathe life into clay. He incorporates the elements of space, time and material quality. Forms are honed and sculpted to balance dynamic surface tension with framed spaces. The contrast between negative and positive finish is important and he creates lines for the eye to scrutinise over, flowing between surface and space, edge and void.
Matt uses a form of meditative practice to allow himself to be highly attuned to the present and fixated to the creative process. He attends to the ‘nothing’ and allow ‘something’ to form. This connects him to deep modes of generative force.
