Emily Stubbs
Through her work, Emily explores the playful relationship between form and surface decoration. The vessel is her primary interest, created by building and collaging slabs of textured clay together. Exaggerated overhangs create intriguing angles. Torn edges contrast against smooth cut edges. Drawing inspiration from her 2D paper collages Emily translates this process into clay, building layer upon layer of slips and glazes. Fluid brushstrokes intercept scratchy monoprint scrawls, set against bold blocks of colour, to give surfaces rich in texture and depth. The finished vessels have a graphic quality to them, with bold colour, strong line and intuitive mark making.
