Jacqui Ramrayka – Brown Sugar/White Gold
Saturday 10th May 12:30 pm
Jacqui focusses on clay’s ability to transcend cultural barriers. She explains more about her recent exhibition and residency at the V&A, which responded in part to several ‘clay and conversation’ workshops she held there, at MoMA in New York and the Gardiner Museum in Toronto. Through conversations and working in clay, the participants explored how artefacts, which are charged with stories and associations, are used to house memories. Making and engaging with objects, such as the clay pieces created during the workshops, was a way to explore, express and pass down cultural knowledge and practices across generations. The process of creating allowed these women to connect with their ancestry in a tactile, embodied way.
Jacqui Ramrayka is a British-Guyanese artist and educator exploring themes of identity, home and belonging through acts of making. She graduated from the Royal College of Art in 2023 and was the Adobe Global Ceramics artist-in-residence at the V&A in 2024.
