Emily Stubbs

“Through my work I explore the playful relationship between form and surface decoration. The vessel is my primary interest, created by building and collaging slabs of textured clay together. Exaggerated overhangs create intriguing angles. Torn edges contrast against smooth cut edges. Drawing inspiration from my 2d paper collages i translate this process into clay, building layer upon layer of slips and glazes. Fluid brushstrokes intercept scratchy monoprint scrawls, set against bold blocks of colour, to give surfaces rich in texture and depth. The finished vessels have a graphic quality to them, with bold colour, strong line and intuitive mark making.”
