Loraine Rutt
Known for her palm-sized porcelain globes, Loraine Rutt’s ceramics explore how maps influence our sense of place and belonging, with clay as the tangible connection to Earth’s surface. Relief maps and domestic scale plates and vessels are decorated with cartographically accurate drawings, following the tradition of narrative ceramics.
Using custom-made needle tools for refined map-like definition, the soft, slab-formed porcelain vessels are scribed with intricate drawings, embedding the fine porcelain surface with inlay and delicate sgrafitto techniques.
Loraine’s work is in private collections worldwide and has been purchased by Museum of London, The Maritime Museum & The Royal Geographical Society.
