Narratives in Clay

An exploration of storytelling through clay and illustrations, uncovering mythology, memory and imagination. Artists Katy Stubbs and Benjamin Phillips both have a degree in illustration and incorporate ceramics in their practice. They discuss their recent County Hall Pottery exhibition with curator Alex Simpson.
Alex Simpson is a British/Austrian artist who lives and works in London. She graduated with an MA in Ceramics and Glass from the Royal College of Art in 2015 and is currently the Studio Director of County Hall Pottery and Head of Programming.
Katy Stubbs studied at the School of Visual Arts, New York, and currently lives and works in London. She uses handmade forms as a canvas for her interest in the tradition of storytelling, based on her background in illustration and cartooning. She participated in the British Ceramics Biennial in 2021.
Benjamin Phillips is an illustrator, artist and author. He creates ceramics, drawings and paintings for a wide range of projects. He was the winner of the 2024 V&A Illustration for Children Award and the Moira Gemmill Illustrator of the Year for his illustrations in the graphic novel Alte Zachen written by Ziggy Hanaor and published by Cicada Books.
